Dora Charles, who worked for Paula Deen in her restaurant Lady & Sons, had testified to New York Times over the requests made to her during her long employment in the restaurant.
The former American celebrity chef, had recently been excommunicated from many of her backers due to a confession in a courtroom that claimed she had previously used the N-word. Dora Charles is in the process of suing the cooking show host for sexual harassment and racial slurs.
"I said, 'I'm not ringing no bell.' That's a symbol to me of what we used to do back in the day," she confessed to the times over the ridiculous request she was told to fulfill.
Paula Deen had reportedly thought up the idea of a back-in-the-day southern dinner. She, however, did not see the significant racism embedded in the idea of a confederate dinner that included asking Charles to ring a dinner bell and shout out to the street "come and get it". All this, in an Aunt Jemima costume.
Due to Charles' refusal, another employee called Ineata Jones had to do it instead. Aunt Jemima is a syrup and pancake character who originated from minstrel shows, which are a category of racist comedy once popular during the early 17th century. It is surprising how Charles had put up with the former television personality's request until now.
The 66-year-old Deen who nicknamed Charles as "Jellyroll," had recently been offered a spokeswoman job for an adult company. The salary offered was in six figures. The company whose name suggest that they produce bizarre pornography for men who like much older women. Paula Deen had not replied to our request for comment.
