Local police officials in New York arrested ten protesters for causing a traffic jam at the George Washington Bridge. The offenders were in the middle of the road down blocking vehicles during rush hour.
The protesters were taken into custody around 8:30 am Wednesday, as stated by one of the authorities, seven of them were male, and three of them were female.
Joe Pentangelo, Port Authority spokesman, also said that one protester was a New Jersey resident, eight were New York residents, and one was a California resident. The officials pressed charges on the offenders under criminal trespass and reckless endangerment.
The reason for the protest wasn't clear, though according to some sources that it was about immigrant rights. But what's clear is that the upper level of the eastern part of the bridge was approximately closed for 15 minutes, according to The Boston Globe. Traffic cameras captured some of the footage as the cars were closely driving near each other.
The offenders even formed a long chain and attached themselves to it as they blocked three lanes causing a lot of hassle to motorists. NBC New York reported that the protesters even raised banners as one of their propaganda methods. "Resist, Organized, Act Up!" was one banner which the protesters used in their demonstration.
Tensions began to arise as the motorists were contending with the protesters. Local police officials immediately took action to address the situation and traffic slowly started to move in a few minutes.
The people in charge reported that there were no injuries and that the incident is currently under investigation. The whole incident resulted to about 90 minutes of delay. It is not clear whether the protesters were affiliated with any organization; however, the group called themselves as #WeAreVisible protesters.
George Washington Bridge is one of the busiest roads in the city, and an incident like this could greatly affect a lot of people and their jobs.
