Portland Trailblazers all-star point guard Damian Lillard just got off from a win against the Denver Nuggets on Saturday. Lillard scored the winning bucket in the crucial last moments in overtime. He continues his rally in getting the NBA MVP 2017 award as he finished the game getting 37 points, seven assists and five rebounds leading Portland in a 115-113 victory.
Portland was behind eight points with fifty seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, but Lillard managed to rally his team, according to SB Nation. With some costly turnovers by the Nuggets, coach Terry Stotts designed an out-of-bounds play for Lillard as he scored an alley-opp bucket from a Mason Plumlee pass which forced the game into overtime.
In the closing seconds of overtime, Lillard picked up a mismatch against Denver forward Kenneth Faried according to CBS Sports. He drove past the big man's defence scoring a floater which gave Portland the lead. In his habit after scoring clutch shots, Lillard pointed to his wrist, telling the crowd that its Dame Time.
There have been spectacular performances as the NBA season started. Russel Westbrook just got a triple-double in their opener, snatching an overtime win against the Phoenix Suns. Anthony Davis also scored 47 points and 17 rebounds in their loss to the Golden State Warriors, setting a record for the most points in the first two games. Kawhi Leonard also had an amazing performance against the Warriors giving his team a win. These players are also eyeing to get the NBA MVP 2017 award.
But it is still safe to say that such performances from Lillard would put him in the race for the award. As of now, he is arguably the league's best clutch player, and you cannot simply count him out.
If he continues to play like this, he would definitely snatch it. Will he be successful in his NBA MVP 2017 award campaign?
