American pop singer Selena Gomez topped the Billboard 200 album chart for the first time on Wednesday.
According to figures compiled by Nielsen SoundScan, the 21-year-old singer's album "Stars Dance," selling 97,000 copies in its first week, shook right past Jay Z's "Magna Carta Holy Grail," which has held down the top ranking for the past two weeks.
Jay-Z's album "Magna Carta Holy Grail" topped the chart for two weeks, fell to No. 2, selling 77,000 copies.
During the week, the soundtrack to "Teen Beach Movie," a Disney Channel film, escalated to No. 3 from No. 8 with 57,000 in sales.
The increase charts a full week's worth of influence from the movie's Disney Channel premiere on July 19. Also, repeated airings of film -- along with its quick turnaround DVD release on July 30 -- should guarantee another solid sales week for the soundtrack.
It is Gomez's first time to top the charts. Her past projects have also soared high 2009's "Kiss and Tell" opened at No. 9, 2010's "A Year without Rain" ranked No. 4 and 2011's "When the Sun Goes Down" peaked at No. 3.
Selena Gomez's 2009 debut, Kiss and Tell, started at No. 9 with nearly 66,000. It was tailed by the No. 4-ranking A Year Without Rain in 2010 (which slightly exceeded 66,000) and then 2011'sWhen the Sun Goes Down (No. 3 peak, a week after it launched at No. 4 with 78,000).
Gomez, who just turned 21 last week, is also the youngest solo female artist to hit No. 1 since Taylor Swift in 2010. The then-20-year old Swift debuted at the top with her second leader, Speak Now on the chart dated Nov. 13 of that year.
Overall album sales for the week ending July 28 Asummed $4.68 million units according to Billboard, down 4 percent from the same week in 2012.
