Ariel Castro, Cleveland's infamous abuser was sentenced to life in prison, without parole plus 1,000 years in court yesterday.
The sentence follows as Castro accepted to plead guilty to 937 charges that would veer him from getting a death penalty. In the midst of unreasonable doubt, the suspect explained what he's done, stating that "he is not a monster".
53-year old Castro faced Judge Michael Russo and said that he was "sick" and was addicted to pornography. He goes on saying, "I hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive me."
"I spent 11 years in hell. Now your hell is just beginning. I will overcome all that happened, but you're going to face hell for eternity." Michelle Knight, one of the victims stood in court today stating her almost 11-year captivity in his home. She was just a young mother who was promised a puppy for her son- only to be tied with an extension cord. The other two victims, Amanda Berry and Gina De Jesus did not appear in court but had their statements read instead.
It was August 22, 2002 when Castro abducted 21-year old Knight and assaulted her for the first time, in what will be years of torture to come- including 5 miscarriages. Come April, 16-year old Berry suffered the same fate. About a year later, it was 14-year old De Jesus' turn, who was best friends with Ariel Castro's daughter, Arlene.
May 6 was the fateful day when Knight kicked the door panel and cried out for help. Ariel, along with his two brothers were arrested a few hours later but his siblings were then released after proving they had no knowledge of the captivity.
Despite the unimaginable horror, the three women hoped. Knight shares, "We said we'll all get out alive some day and we did."
