When Tony Ferguson whipped ex-champion Rafael dos Anjos for his ninth straight win, he put himself up for a possible shot for a UFC title. It was a convincing win for Ferguson at the Mexico City Arena where the UFC Fight Night lightweight bout was held.
Tony Ferguson punished dos Anjos in a brilliant performance with a unanimous 48-47 decision. Ferguson now has a fight record of 22-3 MMA, 12-1 UFC while dos Anjos holds a 25-9 MMA, 14-7 UFC record.
The fight was the main event of the UFC Fight Night 98 broadcasted on FSI and UFC fight Pass. After his victory, Tony Ferguson raised his arms shouting "Viva Mexico" grateful to the crowd that cheered for him during the fight.
Tony Ferguson is now focusing his sight on the winner of the fight between the Eddie Alvarez and the Featherweight Champion Conor McGregor at UFC 205. His impressive win is likely to boost his chances of going up for that elusive title shot.
Certainly, Tony Ferguson's nine straight wins is not an illusion but a record in the lightweight division and the ninth win against dos Anjos will always be remembered as classic. Ex-champion dos Anjos was hoping for a win so he can recover from his sorry loss against the champion Eddie Alvarez but Tony Ferguson surely got in his way.
Dos Anjos was well on his way to a good fight in the first round against Ferguson who used his freewheeling and high risk maneuvers against him. He was able to hit Ferguson with good shots in the opening round.
What is revealing in this UFC Fight Night 98 encounter is that Tony Ferguson was able to take dos Anjos' punches. In the succeeding rounds, Tony Ferguson, with his quick wily moves, proved too slippery for dos Anjos, keeping him off balanced and beating him to the punch.
This new revelation should keep Tony Ferguson in the game for a UFC Fight Night title fight.
