A new Western horror fantasy movie is slated for release next year. Sony's film adaptation of Stephen Kings' book series "The Dark Tower" but has been pushed for release late in the summer of 2017.
"The Dark Tower" is based on a book written by suspense/thriller novelist Stephen King that takes place in a fictional realm which resembles a cross between the Old West and the medieval era.The film was initially planned to premiere on February 2017 but was moved over to summer 2017 for undisclosed reasons.
According to the report, the film top-bills Matthew McConaughey who portrays the role of a vicious sorcerer while Idris Elba plays the role of a knightly gunslinger and Tom Taylor plays the lead role in the movie. The film will be co-directed by Ron Howard and Nikolaj Arcel. JJ Abrams was initially tapped to direct the film, but due to other project conflicts, gave it up for Howard and Arcel.
The story revolves around a young boy named Jake Chambers (Taylor) who hears stories about a so- called "Mid-World" which is believed where they could find the answer to saving mankind. Jake follows the clues until he encounters the lone frontiersman knight Roland Deschain (Elba) who undertakes a mission to reach the "Dark Tower" and save "Mid-World". But Jake and Roland are faced with an onslaught of obstacles to reach the dark tower with monsters and coming face-to-face with a vicious sorcerer played by McConaughey.
"The Dark Tower" will be funded with a $60 million budget and Sony Picture Entertainment expects to promote the movie and create a buzz in the box office. Filming began on April 2016 in South Africa with some scenes filmed in New York.
Critics, however, are pointing out that the film could turn out to be another Western genre dud that would follow in the footsteps of the Lone Ranger a couple of years back that did not quite make it to the box office.
