Getting fired from a job is one of the most unpleasant and stressful experiences that you would probably experience as an employee. While it may be unpleasant and stressful, and you would want to hurry to change your situation, don't panic and remember there are better things that you could do when you get laid off.

Business Insider is suggesting that it's better that you first step back and relax. Rushing into things is not a good idea, so don't talk too much and relax to help you think clearly.

Monster reports that it's important not to let the stress get to you, as it keeps you from doing what you need to be doing. With that here are some tips on what you could do once you get laid off from work:

Don't burn bridges - Even if you're angry at the company for letting you go, remember that what you feel will help determine your success down the line. Bad mouthing that company, during your interview from a new work or even online, won't do you any good, especially if the reason for you being let go is not because of your performance. Just accept it, let only your close friends know the situation and move on.

Don't apply for a new job immediately - After you get fired, your first instinct would probably be to look for a new job. Don't do it yet. Take time first to assess what you liked about your old job and what you didn't. Review your resume and CV as well, see if the kind of job you want to have is reflected on your application documents. Use this time to assess everything so that you won't be just rushing into a job you might not want.

Manage your emotions - It's natural to feel angry and resentment towards your boss and employer. It's also natural to be afraid of telling your family and friends about it because of their reactions and judgment. Even if it's hard, try to manage your emotions. Getting angry at your former boss and employee will do you no good, as you will be the one burdened and not them. As for fear, just let your friends and family know that you don't want to discuss the past, but would appreciate their inputs in helping you what to do next.

Don't decline outplacement service - Consider yourself lucky when severance package involves a career transition service. It may not be easy to search for a new job, especially if you haven't done so in a while. So getting expert advice will help you sort things out and also shorten the time you would probably spend alone in searching for the right job.

Start Over - This is probably the most important step that you would need to take. Once you've already taken the time to assess things, heal your emotions and have a clear idea on what you want to do, then it's time for you to start over. Take what happened to you as an opportunity for a new beginning, either in a different company or a new career. Remember we all fail in life, but those who succeed are the ones who can keep on moving and starting over despite the failures.
