NextGen ATP Stars News & Updates: Who Can Be In Top Ten This Coming Year?
By Antonio Padilla Jr. | Dec 04, 2016 09:36 AM EST
While former world number one Roger Federer is exiting the ATP Top Ten ranking, most of the current top ten players are in their late twenties. The tennis world is now on the look-out for new breeds of tennis superstars who can be the new world's number one in the next few years.
ATP calls them NextGen. These are new generations of tennis players who are under the 200 ATP Rankings that have all it takes to notch the coveted top spot. Their youth is both a blessing and a weakness as they need to beat a lot of exceptionally great players to reach the top. The formidable current top ten players are still in good shape but will most likely not relinquish their post anytime soon. However, these young athletes are ready to take the challenge and can be a huge threat.
1. Nick Kyrgios
He is the closest NextGen star to penetrate the top ten this year. 2016 is Nick's year, winning three ATP tournaments (Tokyo, Atlanta, and Marseille). He moved to a career-high ranking at Number 13. His supreme shot making and ball hitting prowess are his major arsenals. His self-temperament needs to be contained though as his tantrums will not get him far enough in a mental sports like tennis.
2. Borna Coric
The youngest player to be in the Top 50, this 19-year-old reached his first ATP World Tour final in Chennai where he was defeated by Wawrinka. He demonstrated his power and excellent tennis skills after winning against heavy giants like Andy Murray at the 2015 Dubai Open and Rafael Nadal at 2014 Basel.
3. Alexander Zverev
In his profile in ATP website, his boyish look is very deceiving as this 19-year-old is an all-around court player. His statuesque height adds to his already impressive overhead gets. He convincingly won his first ATP title this year against the current world number four Stan Wawrinka. He is an excellent ball chaser that often leads to him converting a point.
