A myriad of mourners gathered in a candlelit vigil outside Eagle's Lodge in Spokane Washinton, where beaten World War II Veteran Delbert Belton's life was taken by two teenagers in a random attack. The candlelit vigil is held to honor the World War II veteran who was beaten to death.
One of the two teen-agers responsible for the brutal murder of Belton was apprehended by the police but the other teen-ager remains at large. The arrested teenager whose identity shall not be disclosed because he is a minor, is held by the police for robbery and first-degree murder.
According to the police, the two teen-agers both aged sixteen, who took turns in critically beating the eighty-eight year old veteran, approached the latter at random. Spokane Washington Chief of Police Frank Straub said that there was no other motive for the attack except robbery. "I don't really care what their motive was," Straub said. "We are not going to tolerate this," he added.
The people who gathered outside of Eagles Lodge sang songs in honor of Belton. They were one in grief as they sang "Amazing Grace". Other attendees sent off American flags to soar above the evening sky. The untimely death of the war hero has hit a nerve and caused outrage. A grief-stricken Alberta Tosh, Belton's sister said on Friday: "He fought for this country then he comes home and a couple of creeps kill him the worst way."
Belton, a Spokane local, joined the Army during the Second World War and was shot in the leg in Okinawa in 1945. After the war, he worked for Kaiser Aluminum for thirty-three years until his retirement in 1982. Belton's friend for twenty-three years Ted Denison recalls him as "a tough old bird". He was known as Shorty to his friends because he was not blessed with tallness in his 5-feet stature. Betty, another friend of Belton's says that Shorty didn't have a mean bone in his body and did not deserve an unnecessary and senseless death.
Police identifies the other teenager responsible for this murder as Kenan D. Adams-Kinard. The police are asking the community to help them locate him. While police do not usually disclose the name of a juvenile perpetrator of a crime, there was a compelling need to do so in this case because of the manhunt. Straub is asking Adams-Kinard to surrender immediately.
