Cosby goes to Ben's Chili Bowl since 1958 and he said he was honored to be part of the anniversary's festivities.
Prior to Bill Cosby's performance, local politicians took the stage first, making speeches on the value and heritage of Ben's Chili Bowl. Most notable of these speeches was that of President Barrack Obama's speech, promising the people that he and his family will return to the restaurant soon for another spicy meal.
Ben's Chili Bowl started as a small food joint established by a Trinidad immigrant through the help of his young wife. Ben Ali, moved to America for a good college education. He and his wife, Virginia, funded themselves through school by the small restaurant that they own. Soon enough, their chili dogs and chili bowls are selling like pancakes, and the chili institution in Washington, DC was born.
"If you were going to open a restaurant in Washington and you were African American in those days, there was one place to really go, and that was this very vibrant community right here," on U Street, said Virginia, now 79 years old as she sits in the back room where a painting of her late husband is displayed.
Virginia then recalled an anecdote which made Bill Cosby very dear to her. During the time when Bill Cosby's show was very popular, NBC asked him to do a press conference. Bill got to choose the location for the event and he chose Ben's Chili Bowl.
"Bill could have done it at the White House, but he said at Ben's," recalled Virginia. "And it wasn't a great neighborhood then ... because after the riots of 1968 many middle class African Americans moved away, businesses that were looted and burned and never reopened."
