India's most powerful politician, Sonia Gandhi, has been released from the All India Institute of Medical Services (AIIMS) after she was taken there last Monday after she went ill while attending a lengthy parliament debate.
The sixty-six year-old president of the ruling Congress was admitted to the AIIMS after she had a viral fever. She was led hobbling out of Lok Sabha in the evening of August 26 a quarter after eight. She was accompanied by Congress vice-president and Gandhi's son Rahul Gandhi.
Gandhi was in a parliament debate that centered on a plan to provide affordable food to two-third's of India's population. This project is Gandhi's "pet project". The elder and the junior Gandhi are relying on the close-to-twenty billion food security program to increase the Congress party's projection on a difficult election.
It was during the parliament debate that Gandhi complained of fever and chest pains. "She was very tense about the Food Bill, and sad that she had to miss the voting. She was very relieved when we told her it has been passed. Now she is fine. All the tests say everything is fine," said Minister Kumari Selja
Gandhi was discharged from the AIIMS at one thirty, Tuesday morning. The doctors who attended to the sixth most powerful woman in the world said that she was first admitted to the Cardio-Neuro centre and subsequently transferred to the Intensive Care Unit as a preventive measure.
After being informed that Gandhi's condition has improved, Gujarat Chief Minister Nrenda Modi expressed his well wishes for her in his tweet. "Glad to know that Soaniaji's health is fine. Wishing her best of health for the future, he tweeted.
Sonia Gandhi is deep in her heels, working for the food bill to be passed. During the debate, she addressed the parliament and said: "It's time to take the historic step, it is my fervent appeal that we shall pass this unanimously."
Gandhi's hard work over the food security bill paid off as it was passed two hours after she left the parliament and went to the hospital. The food security bill is on to the next step, it has to pass the Rajya Sabha.
