This week's episode of "This is Us" took a shocking turn when a character was revealed to have a very serious health condition. When the series returns, the new episode will pick up where it left off and uncover the fate of one well-loved character.

The tenth episode of the NBC series revealed that William (Ron Cephas Jones) has a relationship with a man named Jessie (Denis O’Hare), and the knowledge that his father may be gay or bi left Randall (Sterling K. Brown) at a loss for words. Meanwhile, towards the tail end of the hour, Toby (Chris Sullivan), who got on a plane and flew six hours to reconcile with Kate (Chrissy Metz), had a heart attack. The final scene of the episode saw Toby fighting for his life in the hospital.

Speaking to Us Weekly, Justin Hartley, who plays Kevin in the series, previewed what lies ahead for some of the characters in "This Is Us" Episode 11. The actor said that Toby’s fate will be revealed once the show returns next year.

“It picks up directly where we left off,” said Hartley. “So you’ll get immediate answers—not immediate like one act answers—but you’ll get some answers in the first show.”

Fans were distraught over Toby’s heart attack, and it was speculated that the character might not make it in the midseason premiere. Sullivan spoke with Entertainment Weekly about his character’s fate, and the actor played coy, saying that Toby is “definitely one or the other.”

“I’m going to leave it at that,” said Sullivan. “I start saying any more than that, I’m going to get in trouble.”

After the episode aired, the 31-year-old took to Twitter and posted the hashtag “#PrayforToby,” hinting that things could take a turn for the worse for the character. As NBC will be airing reruns over the next few weeks, fans will have to wait until Jan. 10, 2017, to find out if Toby lives or dies in the second half of the season.

“This is Us” airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on NBC.
