While it is important to learn to say no at times, saying it impolitely can actually ruin not only your friendship but also their trust on you.
Even your boss is joking around, Business Insider suggests that you should still answer with politeness and instead of saying No, you may just resort to saying other alternatives to the ones he/she is demanding you.
"That's Not True/That's Impossible"
Saying these to your boss, even if you two are buddies could definitely hurt their egos. Coming from a trusted and befriended employee, the words "that's impossible or that's not true" tends to be showing no respect for them.
Instead of just stating such, it is better to share also your views and reasons as to why you are contradicting the idea or concept presented by your buddy boss. "That's not my job anymore"
It's true that at times, our boss gives us tasks that may not be on our line of work. While it is fine to tell them you may not be able to fulfill such given the said circumstance, it is still inappropriate to use the very term "that's not my job anymore".
Ryan Kahn, a career coach, and author of "Hired! The Guide for the Recent Grad also say that saying such words to your boss indicates your lack of willingness to help for the success of your company. It may save you from doing the extra job but it will definitely bring your trust rating down even with your buddy boss.
"I can't"/ "Ask him/her to do it"
If there's another No-no for your boss, it's the word can't while pin-pointing others to do the job instead. If your boss entrusted you the work, it means he/she demands full responsibility from your end. It may also indicate his/her trust, hence, breaking such will definitely bring them negative impressions.
Also if your boss gives you a more difficult task, it may be a sign that he/she wanted you to step up and prove that you are worth your position. Who knows, this may also be a sign of a pending promotion, you just have to read between the lines.
"Let's go out this weekend"
Having a weekend getaway with your buddy boss is fine but saying it in front of everyone or those not really close to him/her may not be right. As the source say, it may create jealousy among your co-workers and may even cause issues on a special treatment or that you are just getting close because of a certain benefit. And you certainly don't want that, do you?
Getting close with your boss is never wrong especially if your intentions are genuinely for his/her company as a person. Nevertheless, in being buddies with your supervisor, you must still remember where to place yourself.
