Former child star Miley Cyrus has broken her silence regarding her recent VMAs performance. Her message to haters: You're overthinking it.

The singer has finally spoken out about her controversial MTV Video Music Awards performance with Robin Thicke, which had her twerking all over the stage and mimicking lascivious acts with a custom-made foam finger.

"Me and Robin the whole time said, 'You know, we're about to make history right now,'" Cyrus said of her racy onstage performance in an MTV interview last Monday, September 2. The former Disney star appeared in a brief video with the network, which is apparently part of a longer documentary that Cyrus is reportedly working on.

Cyrus, who had gained fame for starring as goofy country pop-sensation Hannah Montanah on Disney, has said of the flak she received from her performance: "I don't pay attention to the negative because I've seen this play out so many times."

The "We Can't Stop," singer is correct, with pop sensations such as Madonna and Britney Spears also having had similarly outrageous VMA performances in the past.

Support

Criticism over Miley Cyrus' new image and antics may outrage fans and critics alike, but she has found supporters in several celebrities as well. Father Billy Ray Cyrus, as well as mother Tish, were shown applauding in the crowd after their daughter's performance. Billy Ray Cyrus has also gone on record saying he loves his daughter unconditionally no matter what.

Justin Timberlake, Adam Lambert and One Direction were also quick to jump to Miley;s defense, stating that they did not understand why everybody was so critical, noting that Miley was "only having fun," with One Direction's Harry Styles joking that the performance seemed "very reserved."

Miley Cyrus has also found support in another former Disney child star, singer Selena Gomez, who had been shown gawking blankly at the stage during the performance, but later on praising her Disney contemporary, saying she thought the performance was "amazing."
