A cardboard box, containing "human remains" was removed from a home where toddler Elaina Steinfurth was last seen in June, Luis County Coroner Dr. James Patrick confirmed on Thursday, Sept. 5.
The aforementioned box was discovered inside a detached garage in the 704 Federal St. residence of Steven King, ex-boyfriend of the toddler's mother, Angela Steinfurth. The house had previously been searched by County Police, as well as federal officials. The house is a short distance away from where the East Toledo community would hold vigils for Baby Elaina's safe return.
Baby Elaina was reported missing last June when her father, Terry Steinfurth Jr., came to King's residence where his daughters had spent the night with their mother, to pick up the girls. Angela Steinfurth reportedly handed over their oldest daughter, but refused to let him see 1-year old Elaina. When the toddler's grandfather, Steinfurth Sr. came over to help his son get baby Elaina back, Angela Steinfurth came up with several excuses until finally declaring that the toddler was missing.
After several neighborhood searches went unsuccessfully, critical eyes turned instead to King and Angela Stezvinfurth, who told the press that her daughter had been kidnapped.
King, Angela, and the Steinfurths have since undergone questioning for the disappearance. However, Steinfurth Sr. remains suspicious of the couple, believing that they knew what had happened, and that they were trying to conceal it.
Angela once claimed that she had passed the lie detector test, but the police say they could not confirm this. She and King have since been indicted for obstruction of justice, and remains behind bars for questioning. Discovery of the human remains have increased suspicions of the two, but officials say it will take several weeks to come to a conclusion as to the identity of the remains.
An autopsy for the remains has been scheduled for Friday morning, September 6.
