A 107-year-old man was killed in a shoot-out involving a SWAT team; the cause of confrontation is still unknown, CS Monitor reported Sunday.
Police said a 107-year-old man was killed in a shootout involving a SWAT team in Pine Bluff, Arkansas Saturday afternoon after the centenarian barricaded the entry to his home and refused to come out to the authorities.
Fox News reported that investigators claimed the local police had responded to an aggravated assault complaint against 107-year-old Monroe Isadore. The complaint stated that the old man pointed a gun against two people inside his home on West 16th Street in Pine Bluff.
When the local police tried to approach the room where the 107-year-old man was, Isadore fired a shot through the door, but no one was hit.
The SWAT team was called into the area to negotiate with the old man, and they confirmed that Isadore was indeed armed with a handgun through a camera they inserted into the bedroom window.
Three hours passed and the unsuccessful negotiations escalated to the point that the team pumped gas into the room in the hope that they could break into the door and make the 107-year-old man surrender peacefully.
However, Isadore began firing to the SWAT entry team, who threw a "distraction device" into the bedroom after opening the door. The team apparently had to kill the man in the shootout.
Police reports have not yet addressed the cause of the assault, but it explained that police authorities responded and arrived at the scene around 4:30 p.m. and that they "were able to determine that an Aggravated Assault had occurred against two people at the residence," the report stated based on the transcript obtained by WTHV-11 TV, adding that the centenarian "had pointed a weapon at them."
According to CNN News the team found the two victims of assault inside the house, and they were led to safety, but Isadore remained inside his bedroom, where he was shot and killed.
Pine Bluff Commercial stated that the SWAT team arrived on site after the local authorities called for their assistance, and they quickly took up tactical positions around the 107-year-old man's house.
"Shortly afterwards, a S.W.A.T. entry team, inside the residence, breached the door to the bedroom and threw a distraction device into the bedroom," the police report says. "Isadore then began to fire on the entry team and the entry team engaged Isadore, killing him," the police report stated.
Deputy Coroner Eric Belcher told the Commercial that Isadore Monroe had suffered from multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at exactly 7:23 p.m.
Local investigation is on-going on the circumstances that involve the two people who were assaulted earlier, and the law-enforcement officials are trying to determine why a gas was necessary in the negotiation. No further details have been provided as of late.
