The incoming president of the United States is not mentally fit. Is Donald Trump “mentally ill?” This is one of the biggest questions that run in the mind of most Americans. Trump needs to undergo Neuropsychiatric Evaluation, say three professors of psychiatry.
A letter is addressed to President Obama wherein three professors of psychiatry expressed their concerns that President-elect Donald Trump has significant signs of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). With that, he may not be mentally fit to run the country.
The letter was written by Judith Herman, M.D. a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and two professors at the University of California, San Francisco namely Nanette Gartrell, M.D. and Dee Mosbacher, M.D., Ph.D. The professors pointed out in the letter their “grave concern regarding the mental stability” of Trump.
The letter which can be found in The Huffington Post reads, “We are writing to express our grave concern regarding the mental stability of our President-Elect. Professional standards do not permit us to venture a diagnosis for a public figure whom we have not evaluated personally. Nevertheless, his widely reported symptoms of mental instability — including grandiosity, impulsivity, hypersensitivity to slights or criticism, and an apparent inability to distinguish between fantasy and reality — lead us to question his fitness for the immense responsibilities of the office.”
“We strongly recommend that, in preparation for assuming these responsibilities, he receive a full medical and neuropsychiatric evaluation by an impartial team of investigators.”
The American Psychiatric Association (APA) pointed out some important characteristics of a person with NPD. Such as having a grand sense of self-importance, believes he is special or unique, has a sense of entitlement, requires excessive admiration, believes in fantasies of unlimited success and power, envious and no empathy to other people and demonstrates an arrogant behavior.
However, Movie News Guide shared that Trump is not yet proven to be mentally ill and with that he deserves great respect. Dr. Susan Krauss Whitbourne said that those people who have NPD can also become good leaders as well.
Whitbourne explained that “a moderate amount of the right kind of narcissism can actually be beneficial to well-being. In fact, researchers have identified the quality of adaptive narcissism.” She added, “People with a good dose of adaptive narcissism can be self-sufficient, able to assume positions of leadership, and self-confident. They seem better able to cope with anxiety, particularly in social situations.”
Meanwhile, Jobs & Hire reported that one of the major factor that Melania Trump opted to stay in their New York home because of Barron’s autism issues. The Trump family decided not to live in the White House.
