Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, will be stepping down from the Military to focus on other more pressing pursuits: his royal duties, charity work, and public service, a representative has said Thursday, September 12.

William, who is second in line for the throne, has been a search and rescue helicopter pilot with Britain's Royal Air Force, stationed in Northern Wales. He has spent seven and a half years in the armed forces, committing himself to the job so much that his squadron commander has said that his flying skills were "impressive."

Known as Flight Lietenant Wales to colleagues, William, 31, started out in the army in the Household Cavalry's Blues and Royals as a lieutenant before moving on to the RAF. As a search and rescue pilot, he has gone on 156 operations, saving hundreds of people in the process. The flying skills of pilots were constantly put to the test during missions that had them flying into various weather conditions.

Prince William, who had recently become father to Prince George Last July, is said to have a busy year ahead of him. He and Kate and little George will move in soon to their newly renovated Kensington Palace home, and are due to tour Australia in 2014.

A spokesperson for William has gone on to state that it will be a transitional year from him, from being a military man to family man. He will still be serving the public, however, as the prince is active in conservation work. Baby George would also need the presence of his father around him, but sources have denied that William had left the military solely for his young son.

Prince William's brother, Prince Harry, is also active in the military, serving as an Apache Helicopter pilot in Afghanistan, but has no plans of leaving anytime soon.
