J.K. Rowling, Author of the best-selling Harry Potter series, is in talks with Warner Bros. about more movies based on the Potter universe. The studio and author have recently revealed a new agreement in which another movie franchise will be in the works.
Will fans be seeing harry and friends in these upcoming films? The answer is no, because Rowling says that storyline is long over, but the spotlight will be cast on another character that constantly appears in the book-sort of.
The new star of the franchise will be Newt Scamander, fictitious author of "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them." The textbook has made cameos in the book series in the hands of several students and teachers, and constantly mentioned by bookworm Hermione Granger.
Rowling has said that while the films won't be sequel or prequel to Harry Potter, it will serve as a kind of "extension of the wizarding world." Several familiar elements will be present but, as Rowling said in a statement, "Newton's story will start in New York, 70 years before Harry's gets underway."
J.K. Rowling will be set to write the screenplay for the "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" films herself, afraid that Newt Scamander as visualized by another author was going to be "difficult." She has never written a screenplay before, but Warner Bros. executives seem happy enough to let her, excited with what she would no doubt bring to the table.
The Harry Potter series is Warner Bros' most successful film franchise to date, thereby explaining their eagerness for releasing another Potter-related series. They will also be developing a video game based on the upcoming series, along with other merchandise and products based on the fictional textbook. Warner Bros. have also agreed to distribute the TV adaptation of Rowling's adult novel, "The Casual Vacancy."
