A Navy Yard shooting prompted authorities to place the base on lockdown after multiple shots were fired and 10 people were injured, Yahoo! reported Monday while four people were killed, according to several news reports.

U.S. Navy said that the Washington Navy Yard was placed on lockdown after multiple shots were fired inside a building on the base and after 10 people were injured in the shooting, including: one base officer and one Washington, D.C., Metro police. And although the navy confirmed multiple fatalities, they have not yet confirmed whether the reports that four people had died in the shooting were true.

The Navy added three shots were fired at the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters building at the Navy Yard at around 8:20 a.m.

The Washington Post reported that police were treating the Navy Yard shooting as an active shooter situation and that the officer was shot near the room barricaded by the lone gunman.

Navy said in a news release that a "shelter in place" order was issued for Navy Yard personnel.

Yahoo! reported that about 3,000 people work in the said building where the shooting happened, but it's unclear as of late how many people were inside at the said building at the time of the Navy Yard shooting.

A heavy SWAT and police presence were seen around the Navy Yard and a helicopter was seen circling the building overhead.

Meanwhile, a security guard present inside the building at the time of the incident told Yahoo! News that the gunman had fired the shots inside Building 197 on the base, and that the male gunman was shouting while he was doing the random shots.

The base employees were seen huddling outside the base as they cried and held each other throughout the incident.

A White House official said President Obama has been informed and briefed several times about the Navy Yard situation by Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism Lisa Monaco and Deputy Chief of Staff Alyssa Mastromanaco.

No more details on the active incident have been presented as of late.
