Green River serial killer, Gary Ridgway, wanted to help in bringing closure to the families of his victims, confessing that he killed nearly 80 women within 2 decades, ABC News reported Tuesday.

Seattle-area truck painter Gary Ridgway, who was recently unmasked as the Green River serial killer claimed that he has killed dozens more after pleading guilty to murdering 49 women earlier, making the count close to 80.

In ABC News affiliate KOMO exclusive interviews, the Green River killer, who is now serving 49 consecutive life sentences in Washington State penitentiary, confessed of killing dozens more in hopes of finally bringing closure to the families of his still unidentified victims.

"The total number [of victims] is 75 to 80," Ridgway said in a phone interview with reporter Charlie Harger, broadcasted on KOMO Newsradio.

"You can't go back and change the past; it's over with," Ridgway said. "All we can do is try to make it better."

Reports stated that the Green River killer, who is now a changed man after he found God, said that he could have done more to help locate his other victims while he was telling police of his crimes after he was arrested in 2001.

However, Harger said he is still skeptical about Ridgway's motive and tendency to tell lies.

"The strange thing about Gary Ridgway is if you didn't know the depravity, if you didn't know the evil that this man committed, you would have no clue when you talked on the phone with him," Harger said, adding, "This man sounds like he would be a perfect neighbor."

Ridgway confessed that he killed prostitutes and teen runaways by strangling them during sex after picking them up throughout the 1980s and 1990s in Washington King's County, adding that he dumped their bodies in remote areas near King County's 65-mile ling Green River.

Gary Ridgway had been a suspect in the killings for years but it was only until 2001 when he got arrested due to DNA testing advances. Nevertheless, he confessed to 48 murders in 2003 to avoid the death penalty. In 2011, Gary received additional life sentence after the 49th victim's body was found.

But Harger does not believe that the Green River killer is genuinely trying to help the families of his victims through his confession.

"Gary Ridgway is absolutely playing me. He's playing everybody when he talks," Harger said. "I don't think Gary Ridgway can even comprehend the truth."

"I think he wants to show the world that, 'Here I am, Gary Ridgway, the truck painter from Kenworth, the guy who everybody thought was slow since elementary school, somebody who couldn't hold a candle to Ted Bundy. But, here I am, and I'm the best at something,'" Harger added.

Meanwhile, KOMO reported that Ridgway has been speaking with Air Force Criminal Investigator Rob Fitzgerald for the past five years, confessing his crimes and providing clues on the supposed "dump sites" that he claimed should be searched to find the bodies of other unidentified victims.

But according to a CIA analyst, the Green River killer could be leading investigators on a wild goose chase, adding that Ridgway has complained that everyone knows Ted Bundy but not him, UPI reported.
