In what appears to be a freak accident, a young child has been killed in an airport in Spain.
The 5-month-old baby died after an accident on an airport luggage carousel.
Reports say that the baby had been crushed to death while on a conveyor belt that delivered heavy luggage.
Authorities believe that the boy became trapped in the conveyor belt's machinery after his mother momentarily placed him there.
The boy's mother arrived at the Alicante-Elche Airport, from London at 11 in the evening, Wednesday, along with another young child. They had been set to meet with the father, who was waiting by the arrivals zone while the tragic events transpired. The family had been set to go on a holiday in Denia, a resort town located on the East Spain's Costa Blanca.
A spokesperson for the investigating team has said that they are still reviewing the CCTV footage, but the event must have likely been an accident. On the video, the mother places the child in a carrier on the conveyor belt as she turns to reach for something. The child was then quickly whisked away by the moving belt and into the entrance of the bag drop portal, becoming entangled and trapped.
"It seems that the baby's weight activated the belt, and the child was trapped in the rollers in the drop zone," officials said.
The luggage belt could be activated by weight, or manually by an employee.
Paramedics rushed to the scene to try and save the tried, but despite several attempts at resuscitation, the baby was pronounced dead on the scene, by an in0house airport doctor.
The identities of the baby's older brother and parents have been withheld, and no other information is given besides that the mother is American and the father is Canadian.
Autopsy reports that would determine the cause of the child's death is still pending.
