Women have come a long way when it comes to fighting for their right to work. Female CEOs, presidents and board directors are no longer unheard of but are actually expected. However, for women who are just starting in their chosen career paths, some actions could actually hurt their chance of success.
There is still a lot of work to do when it comes to changing the world's perception of men and women. Believing that the world exists to serve them, men are usually perceived to be more decisive when it comes to getting the increase they want or any change related to their careers.
Women, on the other hand, have to fight the idea that they have to be nice, kind and submissive all the time. Most women have been taught to consider the impact of their actions to other people. When a chance to move up the career ladder appears, men are more likely to face it head on while women will consider if the people closed to them want the role more.
As reported by Forbes, saying sorry all the time is one of the damaging actions to careers that women do. While it is a good thing to apologize when you genuinely feel sorry, women are more likely to drop the word "sorry" just to avoid any potential struggle with other people. Saying sorry when not needed could make women's communication appear weak.
Fortune reported that asking for and having a flexible schedule could actually hurt women's career. It appears that women who fight for a flexible schedule are usually unconsciously punished for it in the form of a lower salary bump. Men, on the other hand, who want flexible schedule are perceived more favorably.
Jobs & Hire previously reported that women who have a "professional" amount of makeup are perceived to be more reliable and capable than those who prefer not to put on any makeup.
