New Series are coming out this fall, and critics' steely eyes are set on upcoming future swashbuckling tv series Crossbones, which features John Malkovich as the infamous pirate Blackbeard.
Blackbeard is not unheard of to audiences; he has made an appearance in the popular film series Pirates of the Caribbean, played by Ian McShane.
Crossbones' Blackbeard, however will be portrayed differently, as opposed to the large, intimidating captain-pirate figure that the media cuts him out to be. John Malkovich seems an unlikely actor to be cast as the historically notorious pirate, but Malkovich is said to be bringing a new take to the role. His shrewd, calculating demeanor could add a new element to Blackbeard. Besides, who says only physical aspects is what makes somebody intimidating?
The role of Blackbeard had originally been offered to Hugh Laurie, but due to scheduling conflicts, Joh Malkovich has ended up in the role instead. The two-time Oscar award nominee has had his share of portraying several historical characters over the years, as well as villains and assassins (most recently as retired hitman in RED).
"Over the last three decades, John Malkovich has occupied a singular place in the world of international film, theater and even opera," Parkes said. "We're awed by the opportunity to bring his brilliance to the small screen -- particularly in service of the character of Blackbeard," producer Walter Parkes said of the actor.
Crossbones, to be aired by NBC will feature a storyline set in the Bahamas. It is 1715 in the island of New Providence, which is also the first functional democracy of the Americas, and pirate Blackbeard--also known as Edward Teach--is leader of a large community of thieves , outlaws, and sailors. THe island presents a threat to global commerce, and Tom Lowe, an assassin, is sent undercover to kill Blackbeard, but is deterred by becoming enthralled and immersed in the pirate community.
The production has remained mum on the other actors cast, as well as the release date. Stay tuned for updates to this upcoming pirate series!
