At least 40 victims were killed and at least 80 individuals injured when a car bomb exploded in Peshawar Market yesterday. Peshawar is a north western city of Pakistan. The explosion happened near a mosque, and a police station, right smack in the middle of the Qissa Khawani Bazaar.

The car bomb left the mosque with some damage, as well as neighboring shops, stores and vehicles. The explosion left a deep crater, and was responsible for fires started in many buildings that were made of wood.

A state of emergency was declared in the Lady Reading hospital. All injured and dead from the explosion were brought to this hospital. As of press time, 17 patients are in critical condition, and the death toll is still expected to rise. Authorities suspect that although the explosion happened near the police station, this was not the target for it.

About 200 to 225 kg of explosives were placed inside a Toyota Corolla. The car was parked in a crowded area near the town's police station. The bomb was set off by a remote control. All of the vehicle acted like a bomb. It was also reported that artillery shells were made to serve as shrapnel for the bomb.

Islamic militants supposedly set off the bomb. This has put even more pressure on several politicians who want to ensue open peace talks with the perpetrators.

The attack was a third one that happened to the province within the same week. The bomb attack continues to over stretch the small hospital in the area, who are trying to cope with limited rooms, limited staff and limited supplies.

The attack follows a suicide attack that occurred the week before. That incident killed 82 members of the Christian minority, as they stood outside the Church after service.
