The common image for a librarian is maybe a grey-haired old lady with thick spectacles threatening to throw you out at the slightest hint of noise, but Rhode Island is about to trump that stereotype in their upcoming 2014 calendar featuring their very own librarians.

The calendar features a modern look among the youthful librarians of the Ocean State, to be released in 2014 by the Rhode Island Library Association.

"Tattooed Librarians of the Ocean State" 3014 calendar features 2 tattooed men and 10 tattooed women, all of whom love books and tattoos.

"It seems to be a lot of the young people entering the profession now have tattoos. It really shows how the profession is changing. It's not your stereotypically little old gray lady with a bun anymore,"   says a librarian who works in the area.

The Rhode Island Library Association states on its website that libraries and tattoos actually have a lot in common. While tattoos may especially emphasize a disregard for social norms, a tattoo also signifies a piece of history permanently imprinted on the wearer. A library is also a hallmark for the preservation of history-the many recorded histories in text and books all on its shelves, despite the looming of technological advancements that threaten to make books obsolete in the next few decades.

The calendar of tattooed librarians also means to defy stereotypes of both tattooed people and librarians alike-a reminder that even the youth are interested in books and taking care of them, and that even punks with the most hardcore of tattoos can adore a good book and sush noisy library goers into silence.

The "Tattooed Librarians Of The Ocean State" 2014 calendar sells at $12 dollars and is available through the Rhode Island Library Association website.

The tattooed librarians of Rhode Island aren't the first tattooed men and women to launch their own calendar of books and tattoos. Here are some of the other cool and hip tattooed librarians across the United States!
