Niki Minaj is taking her Hip Hop cred off the stage on to the runway with a new fashion line for Kmart and Shopyourway.com. Minaj says her goal is just make clothes that she would like to wear and to take Kmart to a new level and make girls like her want to shop there. With a line that focuses on bright colors, tight pants and a street smart sexy vibe, she is likely to succeed.
Like a number of current pop stars, Minaj has earned a reputation for making appearances in unique, over-the-top outfits. For her fashion line, though, Minaj lowers the glam factor several notches to produce clothes that are both wearable and affordable. While mixing and matching is possible, most of Minaj's clothes are designed in color coordinated outfits of leggings, crop tops, and short jackets. There is also a slection of short club wear dresses. She cites Chanel, Versace, and Juicy Couture as inspirations.
She has said, "I'm doing this for women, in general, to feel good. Any woman can wear it and feel confident." The women interested in this line are probably going to be in the 15 to 25 age range, though. The $20 to $40 price range will fit their pocketbook, as well. Minaj will give Kmart a street smart fashion edge that it certainly isn't known for. Neon leggings and crop tops will probably have Tweens squeeling, as well, but the high volume sex appeal will likely have their mothers singing a different tune.
Her fashion debut has not kept her away from her other endeavors. She recently partnered with Nelly and Pharrell Williams on Nelly's latest single "Get Like Me."Minaj will make her film debut as Camron Diaz's assistant in The Other Woman , set to be released next year. She has also announced plans to start her own record label and is said to be working on a new album.
