A baby found alive in bag may be a perplexing sighting, but a baby found dead in a shopping bag is heart-wrenching!
A teenage girl tried to get rid of a mercilessly asphyxiated to death baby remains inside a bag by leaving it at a Victoria Secret store in Manhattan Thursday, authorities said Friday, adding that the death of the baby must have been due to a homicide case.
According to USA Today, a Tiana Rodriguez, 17, allegedly gave birth to the baby about a couple of hours earlier at her friend's house. She and her friend were found doing some suspicious gestures inside the store.
Several employees noticed how Rodriguez and another 17-year-old girl, Francis Estevez, were acting suspiciously while browsing through some lingerie.
Reports said the two teens were stopped by the guards at around 1:30 p.m. Thursday, thinking that they were shoplifting, but the shocking discovery left everyone speechless.
NBC New York reported the guard somehow got confused when he smelled a strong odor coming from the shopping bag Rodriguez was carrying, and upon checking it, he was horrified that baby remains were inside the shopping bag.
Although several reports stated that the baby was believed to have died of asphyxiation, NBC New York reported that authorities found fluid in the baby's lungs, leading to their belief that it was drowned to death.
Because autopsy results were inconclusive if the baby indeed died of asphyxiation, officers said more tests are to be done.
Based on Rodriguez' statements, she claimed that she was carrying the shopping bag containing the baby she gave birth to earlier because she was not sure what to do or how to dispose it off. She was hospitalized after the discovery until Friday.
Meanwhile, Rodriguez' neighbors claimed they never saw her with a baby bump for the past few months and they even said that they were never aware that she was pregnant.
Zami Ford, one of the teen's neighbor said told Daily News, "She's a good girl," adding, "I can't believe she would do that."
