90 Tons of salads and sandwiches prepackaged and distributed by Richmond catering company Glass Onion to Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and Walgreen's stores, were recalled because of an E. coli outbreak linked to its products.

On Saturday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced that the ready-to-eat salads and meals with fully cooked chicke and ham could be contaminated with E. coli after as many as 26 people in three states have been affected by the outbreak.

The recall affects products that were produced between September 23 and November 6, 2013, and shipped to distribution centers waiting to be delivered to Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and Walgreen's stores in Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Utah and Washington.

The E. coli bacteria may cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps some 2-8 days after a person is exposed to it, according to the FSIS. Most people recover within a week, but some develop kidney failure, the agency said.
