In an ironic twist, Doriano Romboni died in a motorcycle accident while at an event commemorating another fallen motorcyclist. The Italian racer was struck by another bike while on a practice run for a tribute race for late Marco Simoncelli. The Sic Supermoto Day was dedicated to Simonelli who passed away after crashing his bike at a race.

Simoncelli died in 2011 at the Malaysian Gran Prix after being hit by two bikes. He was struck in the lower body and was taken by ambulance to the medical centre. Less than an hour after the incident, Simoncelli died from his injuries. It was later reported that the motorcyclist sustained trauma to the head, neck and chest. Other parties in the incident were American rider Colin Edwards and fellow Italian Valentino Rossi.

The 45-year-old Romboni was quickly airlifted, by a helicopter, to a hospital in Latina, Rome. The crash happened in the Supermoto event where other well-known riders were present. He died from his injuries after a few hours. Ironically, Romboni died very much like Simoncelli having suffered from severe injuries from a crash and passing away a few moments after.

Doriano Romboni was a fierce competitor having won the Grand Prix six times in the 125cc and 250cc categories. He also competed as an Aprilia rider between 1996 and 1997 in the 500cc of what is now MotoGP. In 1999 Romboni switched to the Superbike World Championship riding on a private Ducati.

He previously collided with another racer in 1999 where he hurt his leg. Doriano Romboni briefly returned in 2000 and 2004. He is survived by three children.

Many fans took to twitter to express their grief over the racer's demise. Fellow MotoGP rider Alvaro Bautista Arce tweets "Very sad for Doriano Romboni. I haven't words, looks incredible...my first suit leather was a replica of one of him...RIP."
