Google Doodle celebrated the 90th birthday of Greek opera singer Maria Callas. Google's search engine homepage shows a doodle of Callas singing while the backdrop of the opera house bears the search engine's name.
One of the most renowned opera singers of the 20th century, Maria Callas was born on December 2, 1923 in New York to Greek parents. She is famous for her bel canto technique and other skills in opera. Her debut was in Boccaccio at the Royal Opera House of Athens and did her first major role in Tosca.
She was known to be the toughest rival of Renata Tebaldi. Her dramatic personal life and relations often takes the spotlight away from her career as an opera singer. Callas was once noted to have dated Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis. Although her career as an opera singer was short she is still considered to be one of the best in her field.
Her voice some experts claim to not really fit the typical classical opera style but no one can argue that Maria Callas' voice was distinct and has its own flavor.
In the 1950's Callas experienced a huge weight with her shows becoming less frequent until she 1965, and it was noted by critics that to the last days of her career Maria's operatic voice and range have already waned.
At the time of her death in Paris, Maria Callas was already considered a recluse.
