A dying inmate is to live freely again, or at least away from being put behind bars. Kristina Fetters was just 14 years old when she brutally stabbed and killed her 73-year-old great aunt, and at 15, she was sentenced to life imprisonment with no chance for a parole after being convicted of first-degree murder. Today, the dying inmate is to stay in a hospice care after she was diagnosed of cancer.

The Des Moines Register reported in Dec. 2 that Fetters is currently serving a life sentence in Mitchellville when the Iowa Parole Board decided to release the dying inmate Tuesday morning.

Fetters is said to be the youngest person in Iowa history to receive a life sentence and she is now the first person Iowa inmate to have her sentenced changed after a major ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2012. The ruling states that it is unconstitutional for juveniles not to be granted with parole. Thus, Fetters' case was re-sentenced by s judge to give her a parole option.

Denise Fetters, the mother of the dying inmate, told reporters that she would be by her daughter's side while awaiting the final outcome. "She needs a momma's support and prayers, so that's where I'm going to be," she said.

Reuters reported that the board has now approved the compassionate release of the dying inmate to a hospice facility, where she is to remain unless her condition changes.

Iowa Department of Correction Spokesman Fred Scaletta said, Fretters will be put under "intense supervision, including regular contact from a parole officer." Then, he added, "The parole board always looks at public safety. Considering her medical condition, she is not really a threat to public safety."
