The results are in for Bonnie and Clyde and it is a decided hit! The show which premiered simultaneously on three networks (Lifetime, A & E and the History Channel) is the fictionalized fable of two of America's most infamous personalities. The criminal lovebirds are played by Holliday Grainger and Emile Hirsch flawlessly in their 1930's Texas outlaw drawl.
The first installment of the two-part special was initially a mixed bag when it came to audience reaction as Bonnie and Clyde purists have been lashing out about the fact that it is not historically accurate but 9.8 million viewers beg to disagree. Bonnie and Clyde also turned out to be the most tweeted about event of the night.
One of the things that the producers changed and played out are Clyde's dream sequences-in this adaptation of Bonnie and Clyde's tale, the gun slinging male half of the duo has inexplicable visions of the future. While it is a rather hit-or-miss choice of storytelling, it was a refreshing way to break down what was mostly a straightforward story.
Another revelation of the docu drama is Bonnie herself, Grainger is a joy to watch and it is clear that she really connected to her character. E! News reports that initially the Borgias actress did not want to be part of Bonnie and Clyde at first but soon changed her tune after reading the script. "Bonnie is such an intriguing, intense character, that it's like, you kind of don't get that often as a girl, you know, to get to be sexy and a badass, and have an interesting emotional backbone, and have these aspirations," Grainger said.
Though rife with historical inaccuracies, Bonnie and Clyde is an entertaining romp that no one should miss! Part two of the series will air tonight on another simulcast.
