Anderson Silva, considered to be the "Greatest of All Time" mixed martial artist, broke his left leg while throwing a kick at middleweight champion Chris Weidman early in the second round of a five-round championship rematch of UFC 168 held at the MGM Grand Garden, according to a Los Angeles Times report.
Silva's leg injury could be considered a career ender for the fighter who amazed millions of his UFC fans around the world.
Silva, who is known for flashy fighting moves inside the cage, threw a powerful low leg kick at Weidman, who checked it. Silva's fibular bone snapped after the kick and he collapsed in agony, while Weidman backed off, according to the LA Times.
Weidman retained the middleweight championship belt via technical knockout because Silva could no longer continue. The fight ended at 1:16 of the second round of the championship main event match.
According to the LA Times, doctors and paramedics placed a splint on Silva's leg and removed him from the cage on a stretcher.
The UFC middleweight champion checked Silva's low leg kick and said he learned the technique from his coach Ray Longo.
"Ray Longo once broke a guy's leg in training using what he calls 'The Destruction,'" Weidman said during a post-fight press interview. "It's knee on shin, so when he goes to kick, you put your knee on his shin. It has happened in sparring and guys take a minute off and walk around, and at least it stops them from kicking you."
This incident is the first in Weidman's experience and the second time that happened inside the UFC cage when another fighter, Cory Hill, suffered the same injury.
"To break someone's leg, I've never done that before. I didn't want to see Anderson get hurt like that," Weidman said.
"He's never shown signs of slowing down, so I couldn't afford to think that because he's getting older this would be the fight where it would start showing," Weidman said. "I expected the best Anderson Silva and I actually thought he looked great tonight. Physically, I thought he looked the best I've ever seen him."
This is the second time Silva lost to Weidman. The first was in July 2013 when Weidman caught Silva with a left hook that dropped him to the floor.
