'The Assets' marks the beginning of ABC's eight-part miniseries that tells a tale of one of the remarkably notorious treason cases in the American history. 'The Assets' centers on the story of how one CIA officer betrayed his country. Aldrich Ames, an American CIA officer from 1985 to 1993, was the man who made a dark move of selling top secret information of the U.S. to the Russians including the most important identities of America's moles and secret agents. The ABC miniseries is roughly based on a book titled "Circle of Treason: A CIA Account of Traitor Aldrich Ames and the Men He Betrayed," which was written by Sandy Grimes and Jeanne Vertefeuille. According to the New York Times, the first two episode of the miniseries will focus mainly on presenting a compressed account of "the CIA's struggle to identify the mole." The lead character of the series is CIA officer Sandy Grimes (played by British actress Jodie Whittaker "Broadchurch"), who apparently led the mole hunt alongside her partner Jeanne Vertefeuille (played by British actress Harriet Walter), who unfortunately passed away in 2013. The antagonist, Ames (played by Paul Rhys), will aslo be presented but in a manner that most of his colleagues considered him to be. Recounts from some of his contemporary agents reveal that Ames has always been the odd one and the subject of mockery for his awkward and weird personality. Moreover, Rhys is lauded for his believable portrayal of Ames especially on how he managed to copy his very Clint Eastwood-like whispery voice.
