Fans of Kraft Foods' Velveeta macaroni and cheese might be disappointed to learn that the cheesy treat is in short supply this winter season.

Kraft foods spokeswoman Jody Moore didn't give any specific reason on the shortage of the processed cheese snack, but said in an e-mail that a shortage can happen now and again due to the "nature of manufacturing."

"This is really a short-term situation that is more noticeable during our current period of increased seasonal demand," she said.

The mac and cheese brand is known for its smooth texture and is a popular ingredient in some dips, cheese burgers and casseroles.

The shortage comes at a time when demand for such party foods is at a high with college bowl football games such as Monday's BCS National Championship game between Florida State and Auburn. The Velveeta shortage also comes at the heart of the NFL playoff season when demand for the creamy mac and cheese is at its highest.

With the Super Bowl less than a month away, the shortage of Velveeta may disrupt game day plans for fans who care just as much about their snacks as they do for the game.

According to the AP, the issue gained attention when the trade publication Ad Age reported the issue on Tuesday quoting an employee from a Brooklyn grocery store who said they didn't expect shipments again until February due to a "plant issue."

The AP said the shortage only affects the Velveeta hard cheese products, but is not limited to a specific area.

"It is possible consumers in any part of the country may not be able to find some Velveeta products," Moore said in an email.

Kraft Foods Group Inc., based in Northfield, Ill., also owns brands including Planters, Oscar Mayer and Miracle Whip.
