Utah native Julia Navarro is on the eighth month of her pregnancy and is almost ready to give birth in less than a month - to her own grandchild.
The 58-year-old woman has been serving as her daughter and son-in-law's gestational fertility after the two encountered fertility issues.
Lorena McKinnon, Navarro's daughter, shared that she and husband Micah McKinnon first began trying to have a child three years ago.
McKinnon said she could not carry any of her pregnancies to term after experiencing around a dozen miscarriages. The 32-year-old shared that the longest pregnancy she's had only lasted until 10 weeks.
After multiple attempts, the couple gave up and started looking for a surrogate instead. Lorena McKinnon shared that one of her friends as well as a sister considered serving as a surrogate but in the end decided against it.
Her mother Julia volunteered for the role when it seemed all hope was lost.
"As a family, we have to help each other," Navarro said in an interview.
The 58-year-old soon-to-be grandmother was made to take hormone shots for three months before an embryo fertilized by Lorena and Micah McKinnon could be implanted in her womb.
Doctors had warned the family beforehand that considering Navarro's age, the chance for success was only 45 percent.
The implantation was a success despite the warning and the 58-year-old Utah native said her pregnancy has been smooth so far and that she's carrying a healthy baby girl.
As part of the protocol for all surrogacy arrangements, the McKinnons and Navarro had to undergo three months of counseling with psychologists.
"The psychologists wanted to make sure we knew what we were getting into - that we were mentally prepared," Lorena McKinnon shared. "Mostly, surrogacy contracts are with people you don't know. It was weird to have a contract with my mom."
