Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder prove there's a reason why fans voted them for the "Best Chemistry" category of the People's Choice Awards 2014.
The Vampire Diaries co-stars and former couple humorously addressed the elephant in the room after their onscreen characters, Elena and Damon, were announced as winners of the "Best Chemistry" category on Wednesday, Jan. 8, by joking about their win during their acceptance speech.
"This is crazy. Can you believe this almost five years in the making?" 35-year-old Ian Somerhalder, who plays vampire Damon in the hit CW series, said while receiving the TV show award.
Referencing their Vampire Diaries characters, 25-year-old Dobrev agreed with her co-star then added, "But you know what's crazier though, Ian? At the beginning of the show, Elena actually hated Damon."
"You were hooking up with my brother!" quipped Somerhalder who was referring to his onscreen brother Stefan, played by Paul Wesley.
"You killed my brother," Dobrev retorted to her co-star's quip, referring to Jeremy, her brother on the show played by Steven R. McQueen.
The two stars went on to take a trip down Vampire Diaries memory lane as well as address the issue of their own real life romance which ended early last year.
"And then she fell in love with me," Somerhalder said. "And then we started dating on the show," Dobrev followed.
The 35-year-old actor pointed out that he and Nina Dobrev began dating in real life just as his co-star went on to the heart of the awkward unrest in the room by reminding the audience that the pair ended their three-year relationship in May 2013. "Then we broke up in real life," the star added.
Somerhalder was quick to add that despite this, their onscreen personas are still dating on Vampire Diaries.
This prompted Nina Dobrev to add, "It's a good thing it's not awkward," followed by nervous giggling that sparked laughter from the amused audience.
Somerhalder capped off the acceptance speech by giving Nina Dobrev a sweet peck on the cheek just as the show's leading lady raised her trophy and announced, "Well, it's a good thing we have chemistry!"
Dobrev and Somerhalder, who reportedly prepared for the People's Choice Awards together, have remained on good terms despite their breakup in 2013.
Somerhalder was one of the first to give his greetings when the actress celebrated her 25th birthday on Jan. 9, tweeting just a few minutes after midnight, " "Happy Birthday @ninadobrev!!! The world loves you! We all do. Enjoy the moment, enjoy the day, enjoy the year!"
