Madeleine McCann was only three years old when disappeared while on holiday and her kidnapper nor the child still haven't been found to this date but police officials may have found an important clue to solving the mystery once and for all.
British police investigators looking into Madeleine McCann's disappearance are hunting down three burglars whose phones were "red hot" after the child went missing, confirmed media outlet Sky News.
Metropolitan Police detectives have requested Portuguese police officials to interrogate the three men, who were discovered to be in the area when McCann disappeared while on vacation with her family in Praia da Luz back in May 2007.
Investigators discovered that the three burglars' phone records show that they made multiple phone calls to each other shortly after Madeleine McCann vanished.
According to the media outlet's report, Scotland Yard detectives examined mobile phone traffic which showed that there was "extensive use of mobile phones by these three individuals in the minutes and hours after Madeleine disappeared."
The three men were accused of breaking into and burgling one or more apartment units in the block where Madeleine McCann and her family had been before the child's alleged kidnapping.
Police officials aren't aware of the content of the three burglars' conversations during that time but the activity raised suspicions.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the Crown Prosecution Service has forwarded an International Letter of Request to Portuguese authorities, requesting them to track down the three men and either detain or ask them to explain the mobile phone calls made on the night Madeleine McCann vanished.
"Whether the Portuguese will co-operate remains to be seen. It is a very sensitive issue with differences they have had," said a spokesman for Kate and Gerry McCann in an interview. "Police want to be given a chance to arrest key suspects. It doesn't prove they have Madeleine but it will rule them in or out of the investigation and that is important."
The source added that Madeleine McCann's parents did not want to raise false hopes but they believe this new clue could be a big in helping them find their daughter.
