Movie theater shooting - an altercation that began over texting in a movie theater in Florida Monday caused a retired Tampa police officer to shoot one of the moviegoers sitting in front of him, sheriff's officials reported.

"Somebody throws popcorn. I'm not sure who threw the popcorn," shared Charles Cummings who had been looking forward to watching the film "Lone Survivor" at The Grove 16 Theater as a birthday treat. "And then bang, he was shot."

Curtis Reeves has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder. It was not immediately known whether he has acquired an attorney.

According to Pasco County Sheriff's officials, the shooting occurred shortly after the retired Tampa cop asked 43-year-old Chad Oulson to stop texting at the theater in Wesley Chapel, a suburb located around half an hour north of Tampa.

Reeves and his wife were sitting behind the victim and his wife. According to Cummings, Oulson told the retired officer that he was texting his 3-year-old daughter.

"It ended almost as quickly as it started," reported Doug Tobin, a spokesman for the sheriff's office. An off-duty Sumter County deputy officer detained the shooter until police came to the scene, added the spokesman.

Cummings and his son Alex, who sported blood on their clothing after leaving the theater, told reporters that the show was still in previews when Reeves and his wife started arguing with the other couple.

Cummings told reporters Monday afternoon that the man in the back row, later identified as the shooter, left his seat and exited the auditorium, presumably to call a manager. Reeves came back after a few minutes, without a manager and seemingly upset. Shortly after returning, the argument between Reeves and Oulson resumed and the man in the front row, Oulson, got up.

Oulson then asked Reeves if he reported him to the theater's management for texting, officials said.

Cummings added that the two men started raising their voices and popcorn was thrown. Officials said Reeves got his gun out and Oulson's wife put her hand over her husband shortly before Reeves fired his gun, shooting Nichole Oulson in the band and her husband Chad in the chest.

"I can't believe people would bring a pistol, a gun, to a movie," Cummings added in the interview. "I can't believe they would argue and fight and shoot one another over popcorn. Over a cellphone."
