If you're one of the victims of the holiday hacking that began November last year, Target announced last week that it would offer its customers one year of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection, according to the retail giant's website.
All you need to do is go to creditmonitoring.target.com and request for an activation code to get enrolled. Later we will show you the steps how to go about Target's free credit monitoring offer, but for now, let's see what Target has done so to ensure your credit information is safe, and if lost because of the breach, is retrieved.
Target reviewed many options and ended chosing ProtectMyID that is provided by Experian, a global information services company to help you understand credit reports and keep track of them. Experian is known for monitoring and resolving identity theft.
According to Target's website, you need to request the activation code from CreditMonitoring.Target.com before April 23, 2014 and then register for the free offer through ProtectMyID before April 30, 2014.
CreditMonitoring.Target.com is also offering a complimentary copy of your credit report for those who signed up and will receive daily credit monitoring and identity theft insurance. Signing up also gives you access to a trained fraud resolution agent who will personally assist you for free up to the time the one year ProtectMyID expires.
When you visit CreditMonitoring.Target.com, you will be given an option whether you want to purchase additional products, but this time it will be at your own expense.
So, how do you enroll? Just follow these steps:
1. Go to creditmonitoring.target.com and request an activation code. You will be required to submit your name and email address. Once you're done, Target will email you within 72 hours together with instructions how you can enroll in ProtectMyID. Make sure you check your email and be sure Target's activation cod does not end up in either spam or junk mail. Also, don't be wary about this information request because this will only be used to send you the activation code.
2. Once you get the activation code, you should visit www.protectmyid.com/target and use the code to begin enrollment. You need to verify your code and be sure to click the red "Click to Redeem Your Activation Code" button. You can also use the "Enter" key.
3. Enroll in ProtectMyID. This time you need to provide Experian with personal information, such as name, address, date of birth and social security number. The purpose for this information is for Experian to verify your identity during the registration process and future log-ins. This is strictly a security measure to ensure no one else, including Target, will have access to your information.
- After completing these steps, you can begin to take advantage of all the ProtectMyID features.
