"Farting cows" on a German farm caused a disturbance when they triggered explosions that damaged property and harmed other animals.

Methane gas produced by 90 farting and belching cows caused an explosion in a German dairy farm, blowing the roof off and injuring one of the animals.

A “static electric charge caused the gas to explode with flashes of flames,” police in the central German town of Rasdorf said in a statement reported by Reuters, referring to the farting cows.

One of the farting cows was treated for burns.

Statistics vary regarding how much methane the average dairy cow produces.

Some experts say from 100 litres to 200 litres a day, while others claim it can be up to 500 litres, an amount comparable to the pollution produced by a car in a day, How Stuff Works reveals.

Last year Argentine scientists announced they had found a way to transform the gas created by bovine digestion into fuel.

They claim the innovation could curb greenhouse gases that cause global warming.
