Suzanne Basso, who was convicted of torturing and killing a mentally impaired man, was given the lethal injection on Wednesday evening, becoming the 14th woman to be executed in the U.S. since the 1976 Supreme Court allowed capital punishment to resume.

According to NY Daily News, nearly 1,400 men have been executed since 1976.

Before being given the lethal drug, Suzanne Basso replied "No, sir" to the warden when asked to make a final statement, reported NY Daily News.

Sizanne Basso appeared to be holding back tears as she smiled at two of her friends who came to witness the execution and were watching through a nearby window. The 59-year-old mouthed something briefly to the two and nodded.

Shortly after being injected with the lethal dose of pentobarbital, Basso started to snore. The deep snoring became less audible and eventually stopped 11 minutes later.

Basso was pronounced dead at 6:26 p.m. CST.

Basso was sentenced to die for the 1988 murder of 59-year-old Louis "Buddy" Musso, whose body was found in a ditch outside Houston sporting bruises, lacerations and seemed to have been bleached and scoure with a wire brush.

Prosecutors said Suzanne Basso took over Musso's Social Security benefits and took his insurance money after luring him from New Jersey to Texas with promises of marriage, read the NY Daily News report.

The last woman who was put to death in Texas before Basso was Kimberly McCarthy, who was executed in June 2013 for killing her neighbor and cutting off her finger to steal her wedding ring.
