Ellen Page followed the footsteps of Clea DuVall and her girlfriend in coming out as gay to Hollywood and the entire world.
Ellen Page, who may have gotten her cue from actress Clea DuVall and her girlfriend, announced she was gay at the LGBT Youth Conference earlier this week.
Clea DuVall, who was the center of controversey after being photographed making out with her girlfriend last year 2013, came out much earlier than Ellen Page.
Oscar nominated actress Ellen Page announced that she was gay.
"I am tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by ommission," she said, according to a report from TMZ. She came out at the LGBT Youth Conference, "Time to Thrive."
"I am here today because I am gay -- and because maybe I can make a difference," she added."I suffered for years because I was scared to come out. My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered and my relationships suffered. And I'm standing here today, with all of you, on the other side of the pain."
The audience then broke out into a raucous standing ovation, said a report from the New York Daily News. She then added, "To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility."
"It's weird because here I am, an actress, representing - at least in some sense - an industry that places crushing standards on all of us. Not just young people, but everyone. Standards of beauty. Of a good life. Of success. Standards that, I hate to admit, have affected me."
Page added, according to a report from People, "You have ideas planted in your head, thoughts you never had before, that tell you how you have to act, how youhave to dress and who you have to be. I have been trying push back, to be authentic, to follow my heart, but it can be hard."
After the speech, she (@EllenPage) tweeted, "Thank you @HRC and everyone for all the love and support.X."
The conference, sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign, was held at Bally's Las Vegas. According to its website, the purpose of the national conference was "to promote safety, inclusion and well-being for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth."
