Betty White is dead at 92. That's what the latest circulating news is claiming. The report says that the Hollywood celeb was found lifeless and cold in her bathtub with a "bottle of unopened prescription pills" in her hands. The report caused a frenzy on social media, but it was found out later on that the actress is perfectly fine and that she is the latest victim of the viral trend of celebrity death hoaxes.
Everyone was shocked last Thursday when Ebuzzd reported that 92-year-old actress Betty White was found dead in a bathtub. The report even claims that an "R.I.P. Betty White" Facebook page was created in light of the tragic news. The page allegedly attracted millions of 'likes' from fans who echoed their sympathy and condolences to the White's family and friends.
"At about 11 a.m. ET on Tuesday (February 18, 2014), our beloved actress Betty White passed away. Betty White was born on January 17, 1922 in Oak Park. She will be missed but not forgotten. Please show your sympathy and condolences by commenting on and liking this page," the description of the "R.I.P. Betty White" Facebook page reads.
Cyberwarzone reports that hundreds of fans were alarmed when they stumbled upon the news published on Ebuzzd such that many began to write their condolences on the Facebook page while other voiced out their sympathy on the Twittersphere.
Comments ranged from "She'll be missed!" to "This is so sad!" However, many were also skeptical on the report because at the end of it are statements claiming that the news is completely a fraud, another celebrity death hoax trying to get much traffic online.
Because of these many fans were disappointed on the nature of the site.
"Ebuzzd, I truly hope you not only pull down this 'article.' but that you also issue an apology. Falsely reporting the death of ANYONE is disgraceful," someone wrote on the comment on the Facebook page.
"It's a hoax why do people have to lie about death," another one commented.
TravelersToday also reported about the circulating news and it even quoted the exact description on the alleged death report of Betty White.
"The 92-year-old Hollywood icon, wearing a white nightgown, was found submerged in the oval tub, face-up after hotel staff noticed the ceiling below her room was leaking. Investigators have little to comment at this time but have said there didn't seem to be foul-play involved. A bottle of unopened prescription pills was found in the room, among other prescribed medicine.
White lived in an apartment in Hollywood's East Village, but had a membership to the exclusive club frequented by celebrities. The hotel has hosted stars like Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts.
A source close to the White family said there had been a small bedroom fire sparked by a candle at her home earlier in the week, and that may have led her to stay at the luxurious Hollywood hotel while remodeling is underway to repair the minor damaged sustained."
It can be noted that Media Mass, another site notorious for spreading false reports also follows the same pattern on its fake news, so many claim that it's possible that Ebuzzd is following Media Mass or that it is also from the creators of the fraudulent website. But it isn't clear as of late if they truly are related.
Betty White joins a long list of Hollywood celebs and TV personalities, who fell victim to circulating death hoaxes. Most recent death hoaxes victimized Will Smith, Vin Diesel, Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber and John Travolta among others.
