Amir Khan did not hide his disappointment when Floyd Mayweather Jr. opted to face Marcos Maidana in his next fight on May 3 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
But in an interview with Ringside, Khan expressed confidence that his dream bout against Mayweather will still happen in the near future, revealing that he recently had a phone conversation with the reigning pound-for-pound king.
"I spoke to Floyd funnily enough a week after he'd announced his fight with Maidana," Khan said via Sky Sports. "My friend called me and asked if I wanted to talk to Floyd and I said 'put him on the phone' and Floyd said 'how are you doing champ? I said 'I'm alright, but why didn't you take the fight? What was the issue?"
Khan did not clarify whether or not Mayweather gave him a reason why he opted to face Maidana, but the 27-year-old Briton said that the undefeated champion told him that they will still go up against each other sooner than later.
"He said 'listen champ, you're a great fighter, I respect you. The fight will happen, you know. I have a few more fights left in my career and it will happen between me and you' - just not yet," Khan said.
But before thinking about his dream bout with Mayweather, Khan has to prove that he deserves a shot at the undefeated record of the reigning WBC welterweight champion.
Recent reports indicated that Khan will likely fight on the undercard of the Mayweather-Maidana showdown on May 3 against either Robert Guerrero or former welterweight champion Luis Collazo.
Khan revealed in an interview that he will also debut at the welterweight division in his next fight, while also expressing confidence that he will be a stronger fighter at 147lbs.
"I think now being at 147-pounds it's only going to make me stronger, healthier and happier when I go into a fight," Khan said. "The speed's gonna be there, the power, and the hunger as well. I won't be tired or weak, so I'm excited. The future holds a lot of things for me."
