The long wait for the next Air Jordan shoe is over as Michael Jordan himself unveiled the 29th version of his popular signature shoe on Thursday in Manhattan.
The legendary basketball superstar announced that the Air Jordan XX9 will be released in September and will sell at $225 per pair. The first two colorways of the shoe were also revealed during the special event.
The first one is the popular black-red-white colorway, which is usually identified as the "Chicago Bulls" colorway. It sports a black upper accented with red lining and white logos along with an elephant print on the upper part.
The other one features a black upper part highlighted by an oversized orange Jumpman logo along with a translucent outsole. According to report, this edition will be worn by Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Russell Westbrook soon.
According to Tinker Hatfield, the Air Jordan XX9 will be the first ever shoe with a performance-woven upper, which was inspired by great Italian craftsmen.
Hatfield, who has now designed 17 of the 29 Air Jordan shoes, said that the newest Jordan Brand shoe will provide superb support and interior comfort along with an excellent structure and abrasion resistant upper part - adding that the Air Jordan XX9 will be the best performance basketball shoe ever.
"In the past, we've drawn inspiration from myriad places-everything from fighter jets to motorcycles-and have ended up with some pretty fun designs along the way," Hatfield said. "This year, our inspiration and challenge to ourselves was to create the best performance basketball shoe ever-and I think the XX9 and the performance-woven upper pay that off."
Jordan Brand fans were surprised when no new shoe was introduced in February unlike in the past several years.
Jordan Brand president Larry Miller said that they decided to introduce the new shoe in April to make it closer to the start of a new basketball season.
"Our mission is laser-focused: We want to provide the absolute best performance products to our athletes, from elite high school athletes to professional players competing for championships," Miller said. "By shifting to a fall launch, we ensure players around the world will have the very best in performance and style available as they prepare for the season."
