When Shia LaBeouf got arrested, he earned more bashers and critics, but amid the growing number of people trying to bring him down, it appears that there is someone, who wants to bring him up and sympathize with him. He is no other than "Lethal Weapon" star Mel Gibson, who may have had the same bouts of scandals and controversies in the past as the 28-year-old actor is facing right now.
On June 28, Shia Labeouf was arrested for disorderly conduct while attending a "Cabaret" Broadway show. The actor has since been slammed by the media for his unpleasant behavior.
Now, a few weeks after Shia LaBeouf was arrested, actor Mel Gibson has expressed his sympathy and compassion towards the so-called Hollywood bad boy.
According to New York Daily News, part of the reason why Gibson is sympathizing Shia Labeouf following his arrest is because he, himself, also suffered a couple of setbacks in the past, which plagued him as an actor and plagued his career as a whole.
In an Indiewire interview at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic, Gibson expressed his thoughts over Shia LaBeouf's arrest and the young actor's career as a whole.
"When I see someone like Shia LaBeouf with the bag on his head and stuff, my heart goes out to the poor guy. Because I think he's suffering in some way," Gibson said referencing that time LaBeouf appeared at the February premiere of his film "Nymphomaniac" where he surprised everyone with his bizarre red carpet appearance.
"Or why (else) would he do that?" he continued. "People are in line to sort of point the finger at him and say that he's this, that, or the other. It's easy to judge. But I'm sure he's going through some kind of personal, very painful, cathartic thing that he has to exorcise and get out there. And he'll probably play it out and come back...He'll be all right. I actually like the kid. I think he's good."
The 58-year-old Oscar-winning actor then dished about the pitfalls of fame.
"You're a target. And you have to be really adept at tap dancing and dodging the bullets. And sometimes you get hit," he quipped.
In 2006, amid the peak of Gibson's personal problem, he was arrested for drunk-driving and accused of anti-Semitism when he told a police officer that "Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world. Are you a Jew?"
Following which, Gibson's career plummeted, but he managed to rebound his game by appearing opposite Jodie Foster and Jennifer Lawrence in the 2012 film "The Beaver."
