The Los Angeles Lakers failed to make a big splash this offseason after failing to sign a big-name free agent or acquire a superstar via trade, but all is not lost for purple and gold.
The Lakers are expected to become strong players in the 2015 and 2016 free agency, and Chuck Myron of Hoops Rumors indicated that Los Angeles could go after Rajon Rondo and Kevin Durant.
Myron noted that LeBron James could be a potential target in 2015 or 2016, but the four-time Most Valuable Player is reportedly committed to staying in Cleveland probably until he calls it quits.
With James out of the picture, the Lakers are expected to go after Boston Celtics superstar point guard Rajon Rondo, who could become a free agent in 2015 if no contract extension will be signed until after next season.
"LeBron will be a free agent again in no later than two years. And I'm sure they'd look at Rajon Rondo if he came available, along with any intriguing names on the restricted free agency market if their teams don't agree to extensions in the next few months," Myron noted.
But while the Lakers are expected to make a strong push to acquire Rondo via free agency, Myron added that Durant remains as their top target. The Oklahoma City Thunder superstar could become a free agent in 2016.
"I think the main target, at least in the back of their minds, is Kevin Durant in 2016," Myron said of the Lakers' plan.
Previous reports indicated that the Washington Wizards will also make a push to acquire Durant in 2016 and will try to lure the high-scoring superstar to play for his hometown team.
Aside from the Lakers and the Wizards, Durant is also being linked to the Golden State Warriors, but Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders cannot see the reigning Most Valuable Player leaving the Thunder unless something "epically bad" happens over the next two seasons.
Durant, who averaged 32.0 points to go along with 7.4 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game last season, has spent his entire seven-year NBA career in with OKC Thunder franchise. The then-Seattle Supersonics selected the former Texas standout as the second overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft behind Greg Oden.
